چکیده

A young soldier was admitted to hospital late one night with it deep wound of the dorsum of his right hand, caused, he said, by a fall. (On subsequent questioning, the patient revealed that he had been involved in a fight, during the course of which he had struck his opponent in the mouth and received a bite.) The wound appeared clean at the time and was· therefore primarily sutured. The patient was put on systemic penicillin as a precaution. In spite of this, during the course of the next three days the patient's temperature rose and he complained of pain in his hand, which showed redema, redness and pus round the sutures. The sutures were removed and the pus allowed free exit. A swab of the pus was sent to the laboratory for bacteriological investigation.

Evolution of bacterial flora in burn wounds: key role of environmental disinfection in control of infection.

Bacterial flora in burn patients undergoes change over period of time and is dependent upon many factors. Study of burn flora is not only helpful in locating entry of multidrug resistant bacterial strains into the unit's usual flora but also in determining current antibiotic susceptibilities. Since no studies are available from India that have studied sequential emergence of different microorga...

Does pre- and postoperative metronidazole treatment lower vaginal cuff infection rate after abdominal hysterectomy among women with bacterial vaginosis?

OBJECTIVE Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a known risk factor for postoperative infection following abdominal hysterectomy. Vaginal bacterial flora scored as intermediate has been shown to have the same risk of postoperative infection as BV. METHODS Women undergoing total abdominal hysterectomy for benign diseases were open-randomized according to Zelen to either treatment with metronidazole rect...

Initial Characterization of the Pig Skin Bacteriome and Its Effect on In Vitro Models of Wound Healing

Elucidating the roles and composition of the human skin microbiome has revealed a delicate interplay between resident microbes and wound healing. Evolutionarily speaking, normal cutaneous flora likely has been selected for because it potentiates or, at minimum, does not impede wound healing. While pigs are the gold standard model for wound healing studies, the porcine skin microbiome has not be...

Comparative study on the antimicrobial effect of 0.5% chlorhexidine gluconate and 70% isopropyl alcohol on the normal flora of hands.

A gloved-hand wash method was used to compare the antimicrobial effect of chlorhexidine gluconate alcohol emollient hand wash (HIBISTAT) with that of 70% isopropyl alcohol on the normal flora of the hands (81 subjects) under conditions designed to mimic use by surgeons. Results of the immediate postwash effects on the bacterial counts for all 3 tests days showed that chlorhexidine significantly...

Elucidation of Strongyloides stercoralis by bacterial-colony displacement.

Two cases of unsuspected Strongyloides stercoralis infection were elucidated by the displacement of bacterial colonies on primary plating media. Observation of primary plates inoculated for the diagnosis of bacterial pneumonia or gastroenteritis revealed that normal flora colonies had been moved and were aligned in a pathway, or track. This unusual colony alignment prompted us to request a stoo...
